The City Masterplans in the East Zangezur region exemplify Azerbaijan’s New Urban Agenda in line with the UN SDGs. Situated on the Silk Road, they serve as a blueprint for urban reconstruction by taking a restorative approach and applying innovative solutions for a resilient future.
The existing blue and green infrastructures, artificial canal systems, parks, trees and surrounding hills, act as the main protagonist in the green recovery by providing a robust and rapidly visible framework.
Nature-based solutions form an integral part of the masterplans at all scales, from overarching blue and green infrastructure to street design and individual buildings. The masterplan’s key buildings are based on green solutions and refer to a contextual approach, which considers the building and its green surroundings as an entity.
The cities are designed as a ‘city for people’. Mixed-use neighbourhoods and liveable communities within the 15-minute city concept therefore play a pivotal role.
