The cable car concept originates from the Lachin Masterplan developed by sa_partners, where it was conceived as a strategic connection between the lower river valley and the elevated city centre. Overcoming the steep topography directly, the cable car provides residents, commuters and visitors with an efficient alternative to additional road infrastructure while connecting the city’s recreational landscape with its central boulevard. It acts as a new mobility gateway to Lachin and strengthens the relationship between city and landscape.
The two stations are conceived as public destinations rather than purely technical infrastructure. Transport, hospitality, retail and recreation come together at both ends of the route: the upper station combines a viewing platform with a panorama restaurant overlooking the valley, while the lower station activates the river landscape with a cafe, shops and recreational facilities. Together, the stations transform mobility infrastructure into active public places and architectural landmarks within the city.
Developed from the urban scale of the masterplan to the architecture of the individual stations, the project demonstrates an integrated approach to urban planning, mobility and design. With a capacity of 800 passengers per hour, the cable car creates a direct and low-impact connection between valley and city centre while establishing a distinctive new experience of arrival in Lachin.
