What will be the requirements for the city of the 21st century? How are cities and conurbations preparing themselves for climate change? In our spacelab we dedicate ourselves to urban studies and generate distinctive ideas and new approaches to problem-solving for the challenges of tomorrow. Our know-how and methods are imparted in teaching and seminars and are implemented in practice in projects and guidelines.
About
Urban studies are part of our work. Thereby we deal not only with actual themes, but especially future problems of urban and territorial planning developments. We apply our know-how in our projects. To accomplish this research we often receive financial support from the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNF) or from Swiss government's National Research Programmes.
City Research
We understand urban research as an interdisciplinary research field. We focus especially on the interfaces between urban design, territorial planning and urban management. The main emphases in our research are "interactive transformation", "urban branding & revitalization" together with "megatrends & future space". Our cooperating partners include established institutions like the ETH (Swiss Federal Institute of Technology), PSI (Paul-Scherrer Institute for natural and engineering sciences within Switzerland), Fraunhofer Institutes and the zukunftsInstitut in Germany or the University of St. Gall in Switzerland. Our extensive knowledge on current and future topics of urban and territorial planning is disseminated in workshops and seminars and we implement it in our projects.
Megatrends
Megatrends are silent revolutions. They change the form of our living together in a basic way. In the forefront of our trend research are the megatrends "societal change", "digitalisation", "connectivity", "urbanisation" and "climate change" and their impact on space and society.
Following every trend is a counter trend. It is the result of recursion and resilience. This knowledge as well shapes our work and is an important for defining theories on the future urban space.
Future Space
We design and plan for today's and future generations. The challenges of tomorrow are of key importance in our work. In the process we focus on design, function and organisation of the future urban space.
Our visions of the "Future Space" are developed in a close dialog with established international Planning and Trend Research Institutions and our own FutureNetWork.
Pilots & Tests
In our Spacelab we deal intensively with new solution methods for today's and future space requirements. With the selected "tests" we generate exceptional ideas and are introducing ourselves at last - also through participation in international competitions with many awards - to the field of European urban and spatial development. The know-how gained from our long-term research we apply in actual projects in practice. Often devised as "pilots" - we develop tools, guidelines and working aids for vital questions related to urban and space development that are geared to use and implementation in urban and space development.
