From Baku to the Silk Road: Development of regional centres to relieve the ongoing pressure of expanding metropolises

On behalf of the State Committee of Urban Planning and Architecture in Baku, we have been evaluating and assessing the development of several regional mid-sized cities alongside the Silk Road to assess the potential of relieving the ongoing growth-pressure on the Azerbaijani capital Baku. In line with the UN’s 11th SDG goal, which aims for sustainable cities and communities, and with UN-Habitat’s strategy of “leaving no one behind”, the goal is to provide alternative urban development in regional centres that will help relieve the densely populated metropolis, and will serve as new important centres for a just and equitable urban development in the country.

These newly developing cities will work around a new urban agenda for an inclusive, safe and resilient development, making sure to cover aspects of liveable neighbourhoods, accessible housing, integrated and safe mobility, and an overall sustainable development. With this comprehensive approach these cities will have the potential to lead the way on the topic of modern urban transformations in mid-sized cities, serving as an example and role model to other urban centres facing especially in the post-soviet era with similar pressures.

With our interdisciplinary team we are striving to achieve an ideal combination and overlap of expertise in the fields of urban planning and urban design, guaranteeing a holistic approach that will work on multiple scales and levels when shaping the future of these cities.
