Ordubad, included on UNESCO’s World Heritage Tentative List, is a historic town shaped by strong Islamic and Persian influences. Its distinctive urban fabric, developed over centuries, is defined by a medieval radial-circular structure and by its historic mahallas, which function as self-contained “mini- cities” within the larger urban whole.
While many heritage elements remain well preserved, others are increasingly at risk and require careful conservation and targeted intervention.
The project vision is to preserve Ordubad’s rich heritage while guiding the evolution of its urban fabric in harmony with contemporary needs. Through the restoration of key monuments, the reactivation of underused sites, and the sensitive integration of adaptive reuse, local crafts, tourism and community life, Ordubad is envisioned as a vibrant regional centre and a living heritage destination for future generations.
